Lunar Discoveries with LaShea Brittain

This week GIC Specialist LaShea Brittain shares some of the TV shows, movies and photography she's into at the moment.

Katie Burke's Photography

Just about everybody uses smartphone photo apps that simulate retro cameras and lenses. But traditional photography is truly magical, a combination of calculation and chance. I want to live in the world glimpsed through Katie Burke's Nikkormat FTn lens.

Amy Sedaris Fabrics

I can't wait to make stuff with "I Like You," a new fabric collection designed by creative genius Amy Sedaris and sold by Windham Fabrics.

Dan Conner

Relive the glory days of Dan Conner (America's Dad if you grew up in the early 90's) with my favorite song by the band Dan Conner: 714 Delaware (It's Dan).

John From Cincinnati

At the moment I am watching "John From Cincinnati." It could be a straight, slightly soapy drama about a surfer family. But the characters speak as though they are on the set of "Deadwood" (David Milch created both shows).  The strange dialogue, supernatural elements and the characters' acceptance of the bizarre are reminiscent of "Twin Peaks."

HBO - CARNIVALE TITLE SEQUENCE from Cinelicious on Vimeo.
I have to throw in my favorite title sequence of all time: "Carnivale." I have re-watched this series about four times now and I never fast-forward through this part.

Stikman

A friend of mine first noticed the Stikman in Philadelphia, and then spotted another in DC. Intrigued, he began photographing them.  I love the power street art has to take somebody out of the monotony of routine and into the moment.

WTF Podcast

Most people listen to Marc Maron's podcast to hear his continuing chronicle of the history of comedy via his interviews with every living comedian you can think of, but I look forward to his cranky opening monologues.

Young Adult

Right now my favorite movie is "Young Adult." This dark romantic comedy stars Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt, and was directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. It was criticized for featuring an unlikable protagonist, but that's a big part of why it's such a great movie. Clearly a lot of thought and consideration went into every decision made about how to properly tell this story.  It's a great character study, with unusual attention to detail that holds up well to repeat viewing.
